I had my vaccine and was ready to go somewhere, anywhere really, to escape from a long year of isolation from the COVID lockdown and not to mention a very long cold winter. I knew South Florida was beautiful, having lived there briefly myself. I was ready for some post-pandemic freedom and getting to see my family as well as fly my drone somewhere besides the cornfields of Indiana. And this quick weekend getaway did not disappoint in any way. The weather was perfect, the company even better and the views from above were breathtaking as you can see from some of my aerial photos.
Besides the beautiful scenery and weather, it was great just to be doing “normal” things again, like getting on a plane, eating out at restaurants, and of course, visiting with family for the first time in over a year. Each of these was as beautiful as the sunrise over the Atlantic for me.
I lived in West Palm Beach for a year, so I had been to a few of the beaches around Boca Raton. They were as beautiful as I remembered. Now, with the ability to fly my drone out over the Atlantic and capture the beauty from a different angle, I was able to appreciate this setting at a higher level.
We also enjoyed some some great meals. In particular I was impressed with JB’s On the Beach. I enjoyed sitting at the the bar outside. The staff was very friendly and everyone around us seemed to be grateful and enjoying this post-pandemic freedom. I highly recommend the salmon salad as it was as awesome as the views of the water and the Deerfield Beach Pier. I could have stayed there for days and never gotten tired of those views!
If you ever get tired of the beach, Mizner Park is a wonderful place to walk around, shop and dine. If you are looking for more great seafood with an even better happy hour, Loch Bar at Mizner Park in Boca is a great choice. I loved the atmosphere, both indoors and outdoors. Believe it or not, it was also the first time I tried mussels. They were delicious and am anxious to have them again.
I also enjoyed a long bike ride while I was there. My home in Central Indiana is hard to beat for great cycling trails, but my time on the El Rio trail near Florida Atlantic University gave them a run for their money. This commitment to developing bike trails is definitely something new to the area since I lived there over a decade ago.
According to their website: the City of Boca Raton is committed to promoting and encouraging bicycling as a safe, economical, environmentally friendly, and health-conscious mode of transportation. With over 84 miles of bike lanes, paved shoulders, and trails, the City has been recognized as one of the most ‘Bicycle Friendly Communities’ in the United States by the League of American Bicyclists.
The trails are a great addition for both visitors and residents alike. Of course, I was only there over a long weekend, but if you are an outdoor person like myself there are multiple golf courses, tennis courts, and pickleball courts amongst the many parks. I hope to have an opportunity to explore more of those next time.
If you’re looking for a place to escape where you can enjoy the surf, the sand, and some fantastic shopping and dining opportunities, I can’t recommend Boca Raton and the Deerfield Beach communities strong enough. It’s a great place to get away and escape even for a quick weekend getaway!
Now the big question is where do I go next? I definitely have the “travel bug” and am ready to explore!
