When I was younger, Indiana was the one of the last places I thought I would ever live. Okay, maybe not the last place, but as someone who prefers warm weather, Indiana was not on the radar.
Fast forward to 2010, and our family found ourselves being transplanted to a small town about 35 minutes north of Indianapolis, Noblesville. We had no idea what to expect, but what we found has been a wonderful place to work, play and raise a family.
Noblesville is the county seat of Hamilton County, named after Alexander Hamilton. It has grown in so many ways over the 10 plus years we have been here, but somehow maintains a small town, community feel to it. The town square is a wonderful place to walk around, shop and eat. From breakfast or lunch at either Rosie’s Place or Uptown Cafe to dinner at Texy Mexy or Grindstone Public House, you find friendly people and great food. And you can’t come to Noblesville without stopping at Alexanders Ice Cream for some dessert! Our family loves grabbing a coffee or hot chocolate from Noble Coffee and Tea and walking around the square. Our daughter could spends hours in the Noblesville Antique Mall or Moonshot Games.
There are plenty of fun and entertaining events centered around the square all year long. If visiting in the area, be sure to check the calendar of events. The Farmers Market is every Saturday between May and October and offers plenty of great selections from local businesses and farmers. It is a personal favorite!
Recreation is also a big reason why Noblesville is such a great place to live. Summer days will see the White River full of people in kayaks and tubes, floating down stream. You can catch a glimpse of them from the scenic Potter’s Bridge, Hamilton County’s only covered bridge, where you can bike, hike, or have a nice family picnic.
Did you know Noblesville also has a beach? Okay, it isn’t quite Florida, but Morse Reservoir is an outdoor adventure. As soon as the temps warm up enough, you will find boats enjoying the water, swimmers on the beach and picnics in the park. If you ever get tired of the water, you can always play a round of disc golf. I’ve personally never tried a round myself, but always see people enjoying a game while riding my bike or walking through the park.
Probably my favorite feature of the area is the bike trails. They too have evolved over the years we have been here. Now, it’s possible to ride my bike from my home all the way to downtown Indianapolis solely by staying on trails. The new Midland Trace trail now connects East-West to the North-South Monon, making a great addition to the cycling infrastructure. They’re not done yet, though. A new trail will soon join up with these two, connecting Noblesville to Fishers, too.
Noblesville truly has it all. It has all the amenities of a big city while maintaining its small town roots and the ability to get away and enjoy nature. Now if I can only do something about that snow!
